What's Gold-Filled ?

Updated: Jun 20, 2022

Gold-Filled is a solid layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base jeweler's brass. Gold-Filled is the process in which a layer of karat gold is heat and pressure bonded to a layer of base metal, the metal tarnish is more resistant because it completely covers the surface of the metal. US standards require the gold layer to consist of 5% of the jewelry's total weight. Usually the gold is 14k gold, but sometimes is 12k gold.

Gold-Filled has some limitations because of the way it's manufactured, so it cannot be casted or poured into a mold. Gold filled jewelry has almost 100x more gold than gold plated jewelry. Since the gold is mechanically bonded to the base rather than plated, it can’t rub off. It has the same qualities as solid gold jewelry at a fraction of the cost.

The Gold-Filled is for people who wants a better material than Gold-Plated but more affordable than Solid-Gold. With the correctly care the pieces elaborated in Gold-Filled could last, but remember this isn't Solid-Gold, they're resistant to water but over time can tarnish if you exposed to chemicals such as lotions, perfume, etc.

If you want that you piece of Gold-Filled to last over time you should have some simple care.
